Safe Tonight Shelter
The mission of the Safe Tonight Shelter Fund is to ensure that no one in our community is left without a safe place to stay when crisis strikes. We provide immediate, compassionate, and coordinated access to emergency shelter through community partnerships, motel placements, and after-hours support. Guided by dignity, safety, and collaboration, we work to bridge the gap between homelessness and housing by offering hope, connection, and stability one night at a time.
The Safe Tonight Shelter Fund was established in 2024 as a collaborative community initiative. The fund emerged in response to the growing need for immediate, flexible shelter options during winter months when existing shelters across Oakland County reach capacity.
The initiative was developed through the Oakland County Task Force on Poverty and other partners, in partnership with Oakland County Health and Human Services (HHS), local shelters, churches, and outreach organizations. The concept was driven by frontline experiences that revealed critical gaps in after-hours shelter access, particularly for individuals and families facing sudden housing crises, transportation barriers, or safety concerns.
Recognizing that “no one should have to sleep outside when it’s unsafe to do so,” the Safe Tonight Fund was created to provide emergency motel placements and short-term housing assistance through coordinated referrals from partner agencies. Funds are directed to vetted hotel partners and community-based providers who ensure safe, temporary lodging until permanent solutions can be arranged.
